There's a decent amount of skills you can get, with all sorts of ways to deal damage, various status effects to inflict, and other tricky ways to manipulate the odds in your favor. Skills in this case have a deck-builder feel to them you acquire them through various means and you can adjust your loadout (which has limited slots) to suit your needs. Like I said, Dicey Dungeons is a roguelike, but unlike the past couple of roguelikes I've been playing lately, this one is a more turn-based affair than an action-oriented one.Īs with many turn-based RPGs, the basic idea of combat here is to use your skills to beat the enemy and do your best to survive. There's also a hint of chiptune in the sound of some of the tracks, which is cool. The music is upbeat for the most part, and has a mostly cheery vibe to it that complements the art style. I found it quite pleasant to look at, and I enjoyed a lot of the fun character designs. The game has a super cartoony art style with cute character designs and a palette that leans more toward the pastel tones/shades. It probably won't hold people's interests for too long, but I appreciate the premise for what it is. The silly vibe further extends to the game's dialogue and flavor text, which has a light-hearted sense of humor. It's a pretty basic story overall, but I thought the whole gimmick of it being a game show was charming. Should the contestants succeed, Lady Luck will grant their greatest desires. Unwitting contestants are transformed into anthropomorphic dice and are sent to brave the ever-shifting dungeons in hopes of escaping. After more waiting, I finally got my chance to pick it up.ĭicey Dungeons is presented as a game show, hosted by the powerful Lady Luck. In fact, it's been long enough that a Switch version was eventually announced, so I resolved to just get that version instead. It's actually been a couple of years since this game came out, so it's been on my wishlist for quite a while, taunting me. Then I learned Terry Cavanagh (the person behind VVVVVV, one of my favorite indie platformers) made the game.

I'm still in my honeymoon phase with this game, but so far I'm absolutely loving unlocking all the new starter decks and customizing which handicaps I'll be having to deal with during runs.I caught one of my go-to streamers playing this game and immediately was hooked by its spin on the roguelike concept. A (free) mode that basically turns the game into a roguelike. You don't just randomly get the best items in the game like other roguelikes, it's your job to improve your run, which makes winning with your own made deck all the more rewarding. Slowly creating your own decks until they just become insane is fun. Also an incredibly well-known game, but it deserves all the praise that it has gotten. I'm also a sucker for the kind of artstyle they use where everything is basically a gun with a face on it. Gungeon, also has just a ton of stuff to unlock and the overall feel of the game feels a lot more balanced.

The game is just full of creative design decisions and I can't sing it praises enough. The controls and movement of the ship help out here a lot.

It was the first bullet hell I played and it never gets any harder than Isaac or Gungeon. Which might sounds intimidating at first, but this game is very accessible, believe me.

It mixes typical roguelike elements with bullet hell. Just about everything in this game is just perfect to me. A incredible roguelike that's a bit definitely overlooked. Other suggestions that I'd recommend are But all of these things are forgiveable when the game just gives you so many shiny new items that all runs are exciting to play. So many enemies that just spawn more enemies, hide themselves every 2 seconds or that just move in ways that makes it pretty frustrating to hit them with your tears. Enemy design is some of the worst I've played in any game period. Isaac's biggest strenght is the sheer amount of items and endings it has. The most obvious answer that's been commented in this thread is Isaac, which I agree is a great game, but keep in mind you really want to buy the DLC to get the most out of the experience.
